I'm sorry if this question was already answered on the forum but I couldn't find it. In its past life somebody must have had a problem with the Klixon Thermal Breaker and removed it like all the other safety devices on this saw. I have a hole in the end bell where the reset button goes. Anyway, after I discovered what that hole was supposed to have in it I ordered a replacement Klixon protector from Wolfe. The good news is it arrived today yeah!
The bad news is that I expected a two terminal SPST type device that would wire inline with the motor winding. What I have in my hand is a three terminal device!? I did some digging on the web and found the data sheet on the part. It's not very helpful; no example on how it is intended to be wired. Two of the terminals are what you would expect functioning as an inline switch, the extra terminal is at the end of a 'heating wire' that is wired across to one of the switch terminals.
Since I have no example to go by I don't know if this 'heater' is used in this application or simply left floating. So, does anyone know about this thing? Hope this helps The data sheet does indicate the two wide terminals are the main contacts for the breaker switch.
I'm sure wiring it in series with the winding won't cause any problems. I want to check that there isn't something I need to do about that 'heater' terminal to make sure the thing works properly i.

When the temperature of the disk gets hot enough the stresses in metal layers cause the disk to 'snap' open breaking the connection between 1 and the other terminals. This is pretty much how a normal circuit breaker works. I think the klixon is designed to be slower acting than a typical circuit breaker however. You don't want it tripping under transient startup or loading conditions.

The two with continuity will tell you that one is common and the other terminator. The secret to which-is-which is that the fan lead and the terminator are alway opposite each other, so with this you can determine how to connect the t'stat even if all three wires are the same color like with the cheap Mars Klixons I get at the supply house As for the ones with all three leads on the same side, I think man form trane is correct that the center lead is alway common.
So again, at room temperature, the two that have continuity are the common and termination. If the common is in the middle, then the open lead is fan. This is a cobbled Bev-Air It used to have seperate fan and termination switches. But now it has one of those three-wire universal switches. I got there and found no diagram on the unit, and no stat like that in the truck, the evap solid ice, and no common to the defrost heaters.
Somebody 'fixed' it last week and now won't come back. So I get called and see what I think they did.
Which may be today or tomorrow if things go smoothly and I can ever get out of the office! It just occured to me: maybe the wrong switch is wired wrong AND is defective besides! I'll feel better making the wrong thing work right. Is there a reason they can't include a wiring diagram of the switch in the package? I do this when I don't know which is which.
